Mumps is a severe viral disease that mainly affects one or both the parotid salivary glands (cheek and jaw area). It is caused by a paramyxovirus, a member of the Rubulavirus family.
Mumps virus is only known to be transmitted by humans. It spreads via saliva or mucus from the mouth, nose, or throat of the infected person.
